CANCER ACTIVIST
COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER
WHEN CINDY DYAS WAS DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE THREE BREAST CANCER IN 1991, SHE
SOUGHT OUT AGGRESSIVE THERAPY, HOPEFUL THAT THE TREATMENTS COULD RESULT IN A
CURE. IN 1992, SHE WAS ACTIVE IN BRINGING THE SUSAN G. KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE TO
COLUMBUS. AS OF 2010, WITH THE WORK OF THOUSANDS OF VOLUNTEERS, THE RACE HAS
RAISED OVER $14 MILLION TO SUPPORT BREAST CANCER RESEARCH IN OHIO. CINDY
SERVED ON THE RACE BOARD AND CHAIRED VARIOUS COMMITTEES. IN 2005, THE KOMEN
FOUNDATION ESTABLISHED THE CINDY DYAS AWARD OF HEROISM, WHICH IS PRESENTED
ANNUALLY TO A LONG TERM BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR WHOSE COURAGE AND RESOLVE TO
FIGHT THIS DISEASE HAS ADVANCED THE SEARCH FOR A CURE AND GIVEN STRENGTH TO
OTHERS.
CINDY'S COMMUNITY SERVICE INCLUDED MEMBERSHIP IN THE PLEASURE GUILD OF
CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AND CHARTER MEMBERSHIP ON THE BUCKEYE RANCH SUSTAINING
BOARD VIII. SHE WAS HONORED AS AN UPPER ARLINGTON ROTARY WOMAN OF THE YEAR
IN 1994.
CINDY WAS A LIFE LONG RESIDENT OF UPPER ARLINGTON AND A 1977 GRADUATE OF OHIO
STATE UNIVERSITY. AS A MEMBER OF UPPER ARLINGTON LUTHERAN CHURCH, SHE REALIZED
"GOD'S MERCY AND GRACE" WHICH WAS LIVED OUT IN HER CARE FOR OTHERS, CINDY WAS A
LOVING WIFE AND MOTHER TO THREE BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS.
